One SPFL owner has hinted that he would be open to Celtic and Aberdeen being punished through the deduction of points in a recent interview.
Celtic has come under fire as of late due to an idiotic decision to secretly visit Spain for a day and then return to play against Kilmarnock without quarantining. Celtic have joined Aberdeen in the SPFL’s proverbial “dog house” after eight Don’s players were caught out in the city-centre and two later tested positive for COVID-19.
Now, the next phase in this saga is how the players and clubs will be punished? Of course the clubs will punish the player’s individually, as will the governing bodies. But, will the clubs also be punished for the actions of their players?
History suggests that the SFA will take the opportunity to fine Celtic and Aberdeen despite there being no real rule outlined. However, some of the clubs have suggested docking points for out of line clubs, or even worse, awarding the three points to the opposing club. Of course these ideas are coming from fringe teams that have nothing to lose and everything to gain by spewing this rhetoric.
One of those clubs is Hibernian. Hibs owner Ron Gordon has been all over the place in terms of who he has been advocating these point deductions to. Speaking with Hibs TV and transcribed by the Daily Record here is what Gordon had to say regarding possible points deductions:
"“I would not be opposed to that. I think there has to be somewhere you draw the line. It needs to be proposed before you could actually implement it, but I believe there would be support around the league for that.“Everyone needs to chip in and behave. “It [the breaches] is disappointing when you contrast it with all the effort the leagues and the clubs have gone to in order to get the game back in a safe way. All clubs, including Hibs, have gone to great lengths, to put resources in place to create the right environment – a safe environment – so it’s disheartening when a couple of players go off the track.“That really jeopardises the whole game, which is a real shame. Hopefully, there have been lessons learned and we can stay on track and continue to do the sort of things we have been doing, because we have been very meticulous about staying safe.”"
Well folks, we have truly seen it all. Honestly, I cannot fathom why any club would want to set a precedent of points deductions. That opens a can of worms for the future. It makes no sense and only opens the door for more corruption in a governing body that is already accused of it enough.
