Steven Gerrard offered big money contract to leave Rangers
By StevieMac
Steven Gerrard appears to be one of the front-runners for the Bristol City job. But, would he actually leave Rangers?
It’s the Steven Gerrard story that won’t yet slip away quietly. Despite Jim White and Talksport talking down the likelihood of Steven Gerrard exiting Ibrox to join Bristol City, there is a report of a huge personal offer being made to the Ibrox manager.
Many informed media sources are carrying the story that the move is very much still alive as a possibility. They say he’s City’s favourite and hasn’t denied interest and one quotes that huge personal offer being made to Gerrard. He’s also still very much in the running on many bookie’s lists and there’s not a denial from the manager or Ibrox directly yet.
The Liverpool Echo, Bristol Post and Glasgow Evening Times will all have some local access to off the record discussions and conversations on this. Those aren’t guaranteed to be correct, but the fact that they are all still reporting the Ibrox manager as strongly in demand by City and in the frame is very revealing. As is a question mark over that denial.
Jim White on Talksport on Friday said Gerrard had no intention of leaving Rangers. Was that an informed fact or one of his opinions? Like that one recently about it being fine to swap the club you support for another one. Yes, we perhaps shouldn’t take everything from there as anything more than another opinion.
On Bristol Post there is STILL much talk of Bristol City still being keen to attract Gerrard to their vacant managers role. They reckon Gerrard is top of the City short list of preferred new managers. Most interestingly they report:
"Gerrard ‘hasn’t categorically turned down the opportunity to succeed Lee Johnson’."
Football Insider then quote a Bristol City source indicating that they are chasing Gerrard with a huge offer.
"A City source has told Football Insider the club are launching an extraordinary offer to Gerrard that would top his £2.5million-a-year Rangers package."
That report continues with the news that the offer would make the current Ibrox manager the highest paid manager in the Championship.
The media reports all carry the same view that the move is still very much a possibility given the drive at Bristol City to secure their no. 1 target in Gerrard. But they recognise it may be a hard task to tear him away from Rangers, with their top wages offer they are giving it their best shot.
It’s very much tongue in cheek as a thought but maybe now he’s got a trophy on his Rangers CV after the Lyon Tournoi, perhaps he can move on now as a successful manager. Let’s leave the last word on that trophy though to Chris Sutton even if we haven’t yet heard the last word on Gerrard to City, it’s not over yet.
