Rumours about Steven Gerrard leaving the Rangers for a return to English football are starting to intensify as the new season edges closer.

It’s said there is no smoke without fire, someone has definitely got the matches out then, with reports today that Gerrard is earmarked for the Bristol City manager job.

When we reported on this last week we emphasised it was based at that time on a series of online rumours and speculation. That’s hardening now with more specific reporting by main stream media on Sunday, plus other social media views and opinions.

The Bristol Post with its own local sources of information to judge stories by talks of reports suggesting Rangers manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard had been ‘earmarked’ for the job

The Sunday Express talks about City being eager to get Gerrard on board as manager.  They reckon the Bristol City tycoon and owner Steve Lansdown has Gerrard on the shortlist he has drawn up for the managers job. A shortlist of course means other candidates, with the likes of Chris Hughton very much in the frame, but also interested in the vacant role at Birmingham.

According to the Sunday Express though:

"“Lansdown believes that Gerrard is the man to fulfil his ambition of mounting a bid to win promotion to the Premier League next season.”"

The Scottish Sun also headline the story as:

"“Rangers boss Steven Gerrard emerges as shock target for Bristol City”"

Less of a shock if you read our articles here!

The Scottish Sun also repeats the news of Gerrard being high in the shortlist and favoured by Lansdown as his top candidate. As does the BBC below, so the story is certainly spreading and gathering.

Elsewhere on social media you can find “in the know” experts who will even claim Gerrard has been interviewed for the role. Who knows.

It is worth noting though that when the managers role at Birmingham City came up and there were links to Gerrard, there were pretty swift denials of interest. It’s all quiet on the Bristol front so far in that respect.

And in our previous story last week we did refer to possible exit agreements for Gerrard from Rangers, he’s going to leave at some point, perhaps better before another failed and losers season in Scotland.

Again, it’s lots of speculation, but growing and firming up in places as the mainstream media pick up the story. Gerrard will undoubtedly want to manage in the EPL and although the Championship may yet be his best route, Bristol City haven’t yet given up on getting a play off place there in the current season.
