Celtic linked with Newcastle star as Forster replacement
Celtic are in need of a talented and capable goalkeeper. Could they potentially pursue an impressive English keeper?
Celtic have been accredited with an apparent interest in Newcastle United 23 year old goalkeeper Freddie Woodman according to the Chronicle. Familiar to many in Scottish football for his respective spells at Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, the Londoner could represent astute business should the Bhoys choose to hunt his signature.
Currently on loan with Swansea City, Woodman has excelled himself keeping an impressive 12 clean sheets in 41 Sky Bet Championship outings for the Jacks aiding their play-off endeavours. At 23 years of age, acquiring the stopper could provide a potential long-term solution in goal for Celtic.
Moreover, parent club Newcastle have successfully courted the signature of former Motherwell keeper Mark Gillespie. Slim hopes of Woodman breaking the mould at the Tyneside club, have effectively faded into the abyss, with Martin Dúbravka and Karl Darlow also ahead in the pecking-order
Theoretically, he could be available at a knock-down fee which could be of interest to the Parkhead club. Additionally, there is an argument that he could present more value for money than someone of rumoured target David Marshall’s ilk due to 12 years of age separating them respectively.
Neil Lennon has recently referenced major stumbling blocks in pursuit of the influential Fraser Forster; with the player thought to have stalled on a return to Celtic Park. With only Scott Bain registered as a senior keeper, along with the European qualification campaign beginning next month there is an urgency from the management and board to nail down the services of a quality goalkeeper; only time will tell if Freddie Woodman could imaginably be Forster’s replacement.
