There’s growing speculation around the whereabouts of Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos now that clubs are returning to training.

There’s been a lack of visible evidence of Alfredo Morelos being back in Scotland now that training has resumed. Perhaps the Rangers need to hire a private investigator. Or maybe they know where he is but don’t want to talk about. And maybe, not unsurprisingly, Scottish media doesn’t seem to be asking too many questions.

So what’s the story, what’s known and what’s speculation?

If you look for news about Morelos mostly you’ll find articles talking about selling him. And the occasional one from the club about how he’s there to stay. The Daily Record has the latest news about him being chased by Al-Duhail who they describe as ‘free-spending Qatar big-hitters’ AND by a premiership club. It’s like the latest version of the rumoured Chinese club bidding for him previously, all talk and little evidence to back it up. The newspaper goes on to reveal it’s Leicester City who are the other interested club.

The Record’s headline shouts loudly:

"“Alfredo Morelos in double transfer link as Rangers striker ‘wanted’ in Premier League and Qatar”"

And The Record’s article says:

"“Record Sport enquired after a previous link with Brendan Rodgers’ side and were told there was no interest in the player at that present time.”"

Let’s face it, Rodgers has seen Morelos play and throw tantrums. Rodgers hasn’t seen him score against his then Celtic side. Hard to think why he’d be interested at all, but what a mixed up article and headline to try and make it look as if he is.

If you look for other news about Morelos, such as “is he returning to training?” with his teammates, there is quite a gap in information, or news, or in fact no sign of any mentions at all.

How odd. Especially when he’s in the news about possible transfer bids.

We have seen a few negative articles in the Scottish media about the Rangers being deleted or withdrawn recently. There is speculation that an article in one of the bigger Scottish newspapers about his return might have been published and then removed. Apparently it reflected that Morelos had missed the opportunity to return from Colombia to Scotland before the UK 14-day isolation rule kicked in on June 8. It’s certainly not visible any more.

Morelos was allowed to return to Colombia during lockdown and he was there late in May when the Daily Record reported on his daughter’s birth there. And it’s public knowledge  and UK government advice that Colombia announced late in May it was imposing one of the toughest travel bans in the world to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic, saying no international passenger flights will be allowed until August 31. It’s entirely possible he is unable to return to the U.K.

There were already questions over how fit Morelos would be when returning to training. If he misses some preseason training or can’t play for a few weeks, that’s even more of a concern over at Ibrox.

Maybe the media should be asking more questions. Or publishing more information. Or wondering how desperate really is the need to make a sale.  David Murray used to  be known for jetting in new signings, they could maybe do with a jet now!
