Chris Sutton blasts Kris Ajer for wanting to leave Celtic
By Kade Kistner
Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently gone on the record trying to convince Kristoffer Ajer to stay on for another season with the club.
Celtic legend Chris Sutton is quite possibly the biggest supporter of the club in the media. On top of that he is not afraid to let his thoughts be known whether through his persuasive writing or his Grade A troll jobs against Rangers and their supporters.
Now he is using his platform and massive sway to try something different from his norm: change a current player’s mind. It usually doesn’t take much to entice a player to make the move to Celtic, much less convince one to stay for the 10-in-a-row. Yet that appears to be the case with centre-back Kristoffer Ajer.
Ajer appears to be on the out, even after he recently fired his agent who told the media he wouldn’t be returning. On top of that, Neil Lennon reportedly told a group of his friends that he did not expect Ajer to return next season. All of this has led to drama surrounding the Norwegian’s future with the club which has prompted Sutton to speak up.
Here is what Sutton wrote in his Daily Record column about Ajer:
"“Working for Lennon is the best way to get better at this stage of his career.“Another season allows him to work on parts of his game that need improving as he’s still a baby in terms of his football development. There’s no rush.“It’s good to be hungry but another year’s experience at a club where he’s virtually guaranteed to play and develop would be perfect. Timing is everything in football and, for Ajer, it’s important he picks the right moment to move on that suits his career.“Now is definitely not that time. Reality is everything and for Ajer to go higher, he must keep his feet planted on the ground.”"
In today’s football everyone believes they have a right to play in the English Premier League while not worrying about having to cut their teeth elsewhere. Celtic is a large club, and world renowned at that. Their winning culture draws immense talent from across the globe.
Sutton is right. Ajer has all the talent and hunger in the world to be whatever he wants to be. But right now there is work to do, and the Norwegian still has some lessons to learn. Another season with Celtic would benefit him with his development and show dedication to a club and its goals. Leaving now would be nothing but a quick money grab.
