Scott McKenna

Yes, the Aberdeen centre-back we’ve been hearing rumours about for a while. We’re very likely still monitoring and keeping tabs on him. Maybe there would have been more definite news if he not had a couple of bad injuries last season.

McKenna is only 23-years old and that does balance with some criticism of being inexperienced for a centre-half. Those roles tend to be held down by older players, though Celtic themselves often prove that incorrect. He has spent time on loans with Alloa and Ayr,  which are great for playing hours experience but maybe not as preparation for pitting your skills against European club competition.

For a couple of million, the guy may be a decent emergency cover signing cover for Celtic. But he’s not going to be better than our first team. And it’d be raw experience and nerve racking if we have to drop him into a top European game. If we don’t feel confident he could cover there for us if needed, then why would you buy as cover?

Aberdeen have been bandying around multi-millionaire pound fees. He’s definitely not in that class if you are paying your own money. He’s not likely to be the answer for Celtic, no matter how much we rewrite the question.
