Walter Smith has spoken out about Rangers coming second. In doing so the ex-Light Blues manager took a wee swipe at the historic achievement of Celtic.

He’s one of the few men the Scottish media still refer to on a first name basis proving a warm,  friendly basis and relationship for his news and comments. But while he might be Walter to those eager to please journalists over many years, who can forget the crowds proud banner at Ibrox “Walter Legned”? From which point this full name was a Celtic favourite.

He’s been talking on Sky Sports and reported in the Daily Record about Celtic’s historic win and therefore the Rangers loss and coming second again.

The Record also refer to Celtic matching his achievement of nine-in a-row with Rangers back in the nineties. Whereas it was more a case of them matching the Hoops first,  from the late-sixties and seventies.

Smith talked about the pain of watching Celtic celebrate stopping Rangers secure ten-in-a-row back in 1998. He reckons losing this year will spur manager Steven Gerrard, and whatever players he still has available, on to greater things this season.

"“Hopefully Rangers, who have been making progress under Steven Gerrard over the last couple of seasons, can get together and try and prevent Celtic getting 10.”"

Progress to zero trophies, day to day finances needing propped up and a disintegrating squad.

He was though quite fair in his assessment that Celtic have been uppermost in the league, with a really good team, for several years. Well done there, sometimes the facts and finishing places just can’t be hidden. You don’t come second and get a secret side letter that says you were first really do you?

But he still couldn’t resist a small dig at Celtic.

"“They’ve managed to win nine championships in a row … well, eight championships in a row and now this one for the ninth."

If you choose to take it as a dig that is. Many will see it as such, others merely as another confirmation of 9 in a row. A definite step on the way to 10. It’ll take a more than a “legnedary” effort to prevent that.
