Chris Sutton clearly holds the Celtic star in high esteem as he compared him with Virgil van Dijk, a man who finished just behind Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or standings this year.

Virgil van Dijk is without doubt one of the best players in the world right now. The Dutch defender’s immense potential was there for all to see during his stint at Celtic as he coasted through the Scottish Premiership. But nobody could have predicted the heights his career would reach after leaving for the Premier League.

After completing a £75 million move to Liverpool from Southampton, van Dijk has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s side into one of the best in Europe. They won the UEFA Champions League last season and will more than likely end a decade-long wait for the Premier League title this year.

Many would even argue that van Dijk deserved the Ballon d’Or over Lionel Messi this year but that is a discussion for another day.

Chris Sutton believes that Odsonne Edouard has the ability and talent to forge a career similar to van Dijk when he eventually leaves Parkhead. The former Celtic man wrote in his column in the Daily Record:

"“The French striker is going to the very top just like Van Dijk and he’s been sensational.“The striker can do everything. He links the game, he makes runs, he creates and he is a quality finisher.“Edouard really assumed the mantle of responsibility as [Neil] Lennon chased the nine last season and delivered in emphatic style for his boss and team.”"

Celtic fans will be hoping that that day does not arrive soon if ever. The Frenchman has become arguably the most important part of the Hoops side. He contributed to 47 goals in just 46 appearances last season, more than a goal a game!

Nobody at Parkhead will want to lose him before next season, when they go on a quest for the Holy Grail – 10IAR!
