What do you do as a club when you risk more statements than days of the week? Roll out yet another ex player to make a point in your favour of course.

This time it’s Arthur Numan who played for Rangers from 1998 to 2003, a time when the wages were high and taxes an irrelevance. He’s currently a scout at AZ Alkmaar but I don’t see too many badges coming his way from the east end of Glasgow for his line of thought on ending leagues.

In Holland the football association, KNVB, declared their season was over. Ajax would finish top for European qualification purposes. But no trophies would be presented and there’d be no relegations either.

In a Sunday Post interview Arthur says Scottish football should follow the same principle and not declare Champions. Of course he does! It’s surprising perhaps that he hasn’t gone further and suggested Celtic and Rangers go dutch properly and share the league.

His reasoning soon became clear. Arthur reckons it’s ok to make Celtic the No. 1 team and give them entry into the Champions League.

"“But, as is the case in Holland, don’t call them champions. That would mean Celtic would not have won nine-in-a-row.”"

There it is, the reason, the fear of getting to 10iar is enormous for Rangers followers.

While Arthur is keen for this to happen in Scotland he admits the decision in Holland is very frustrating from an AZ Alkmaar point of view and isn’t perfect. But when speaking with the Sunday Post they say he thinks it’s better than the way the SPFL has handled the situation to date.

"“I know the situation in Scotland isn’t as clear-cut as in Holland.”"

Clear cut is where things get confusing. Arthur may know his oranges but he’s all apples and pears on his logic here. In Scotland, Celtic are thirteen points ahead of Rangers in second place. In Holland,  Ajax are top on goal difference with 9 games left to play ahead of AZ Alkmaar in second place. With Utrecht only 3 points and a game in hand behind Willem II in third.

I wonder what sort of clear cut Arthur had in mind?

He also reckons UEFA should have been stronger showing decisiveness and leadership last week.

"“There should have been clearer messages. It wasn’t decisive enough for me.”"

He’s referring to last weeks UEFA meeting when they took strong decisions and provided clear guidance and leadership to Europe’s leagues on how they could be ended.

"“I suppose that as long as each decision is reached in a democratic way then that is as much as we can ask for.”"

Maybe we get the SPFL to have a vote on it. Would over 80% in favour be democratic enough Arthur?

When you look at the logic he’s applied, it’s all over the place. It’s another desperate attempt to try and avoid 9 in a row. But that is coming soon for Celtic, one way or another.
