The Manchester United star revealed why he rejected a chance to move to Celtic on loan although he was struggling to break into the first-team at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay’s talent has never been in question but at one point he was really struggling for minutes at Manchester United. Associated with the club since the age of five, he is finally established himself as a first-team regular this season. The story was very different last year though and he was even linked with a loan move to Celtic in search for regular football.

Brendan Rodgers was very keen to bring McTominay to Parkhead and it would have made sense for him to join Scotland’s biggest side as well, after having established himself in the national team. But the youngster decided against the move and ended up staying at Old Trafford. In fact, he has never been out on loan in his career.

And his patience is finally starting to pay off as the 23-year-old has been one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most trusted men this season. He has made 27 appearances this season, scoring 5 times and assisting another.

Recently he opened up on why he decided against leaving Old Trafford when he had the chance to join Celtic on loan. As reported by the Daily Record, McTominay said:

"“About a year-and-a-half ago there was a time where it (loan move) might have been a possibility and then somebody leaves or something like that, and then your opportunity comes and you have to take it.“You hear loads of stories about boys going on loan and different things like that and I always had it in my head that I don’t want that. I want to be showing myself here first and if it doesn’t work here then you go somewhere else.“For me, you hear the stories about getting the life of luxury at Manchester United and people take that for granted, like the food in the canteen, your kit being laid out for you every morning.“People just expect that and you have to always remember where you come from in that respect and always appreciate what people do for you. I feel like that is culture that is brought through for us.”"

Celtic fans would have certainly loved to see him showcase his skills at Parkhead. But in hindsight, it was probably the right move for both parties after Brendan Rodgers jumped ship not long after. We can only wish McTominay the best for his future.
