Despite having just joined Montreal Impact in March, a return to Celtic might still be on the cards for Victor Wanyama.
Although Victor Wanyama spent just a couple of seasons at Parkhead during his spell at Celtic, it is safe to say that the Hoops faithful have not forgotten him or his exploits. Bought from Beerschot for just £900,000, the Kenyan’s performances quickly the eye of clubs of around Europe and two years later he would move to Southampton for £11 million.
He continued to impress in England as well and after three brilliant seasons at St Mary’s Stadium he took the next step in his career by following Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur. But things fell apart for the midfielder at White Hart Lane after a successful debut campaign. A series of injuries led him to losing his place in the first-team and he was never able to get it back.
This would give rise to rumours of a return to Celtic. While the move appeared close on a number of occasions, it never materialised. And ultimately Wanyama would have to settle for a move to Montreal Impact. But that does not mean that he has closed the door on the possibility of a Parkhead comeback in the future.
Speaking with The Athletic, Wanyama said:
"‘They need to let you grow and achieve what you want. But I want to play for Celtic again before I finish. I have unfinished business there. I love that club.”"
Wanyama is just 28 years old right now and time is on his side if he does intend on eventually returning to Celtic one day. Neil Lennon is quite clearly a huge admirer of the Kenyan and would love to work with him again. So if he manages to rediscover his form in the MLS, do not be surprised if the Hoops come calling for him again.
