Rangers have been left red-faced after making baseless allegations against the SPFL, who decided to call out the Ibrox club for their lies.

By now it is pretty clear that the Rangers would love to get the season cancelled by hook or by crook so that they can prevent Celtic from winning a deserved ninth straight league title. Their mission does not appear to be getting a lot of support though as 85% of clubs in Scotland voted for the lower leagues to be declared finished.

It would allow the SPFL to pay off the prize money to the clubs so that they can stay afloat in times of financial distress with the coronavirus outbreak forcing all league competitions to remain suspended. Of course there were the usual suspects who voted against the movement, namely those with agendas against the clubs set to be declared champions and those with fears of being eliminated themselves.

As expected, Rangers did not take too well to the fact that the majority of the clubs did not support their view. Instead, they decided to ask for SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster to be suspended and the voting process to be investigated. Apparently a whistleblower warned them against the governing body’s handling of the voting process.

Rangers have not been able to provide any proof of their claims yet though and the SPFL were not just going to take it lying down. As reported by the Daily Record, SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan has hit back at the Ibrox club in a recent statement:

"“It is extremely concerning that Rangers have chosen to make a number of very serious allegations against the SPFL, its corporate governance, its culture, its office-bearers and its business operations.“In the often-heated atmosphere of Scottish football, rumour and misinformation can very quickly reach fever-point.“However, allegations of a lack of even-handedness and fair play go to the very integrity of the league and I would expect Rangers Interim Chairman Douglas Park to present compelling evidence to back up his claims, or to withdraw them.“I anticipate that the SPFL Board will convene early next week to discuss a wide variety of issues and I will be writing to Mr Park asking him to urgently communicate any and all information he possesses in order that the board can take whatever steps are necessary.”"

It is just extremely ironic and hilarious that the Rangers have decided to make such serious allegations against a body whose decisions have mostly favoured them in the past. If there was ever an instance of shooting oneself in the foot, this certainly is it.
