Celtic have once again been fined by UEFA due to the late kickoff in Copenhagen. The timing is interesting amid financial concerns due to COVID-19.
Celtic is no stranger to fines from UEFA, and as such it should come as no surprise that the Hoops have once again been fined. This time, the fine comes in the form of €15,000 due to being the responsible party that cause the Europa League Round of 32 match against Copenhagen to start late.
UEFA also sent a warning to Hoops manager Neil Lennon over the incident in the form of a censure. This measure by UEFA also opens the door for future penalties that could be even more harsh if the same offense occurs again.
The timing of the fine is interesting as most clubs are dealing with financial hardships to begin with due to the novel coronavirus. Most clubs, especially smaller market clubs, are struggling to stay afloat. Meanwhile, UEFA is still imposing fines on clubs when little to no revenue is coming in.
Being the reason a European match started late is not a trivial matter, but perhaps the timing of the fine could have been better thought out. The fact that it was levied at this time can send a tone-deaf type of feeling from UEFA, which it already has a reputation for being.
In any case, Celtic will get through this fine, just like they have every other fine (usually due to fans’ signs and remarks). Stay safe, and stay healthy!
