Michael Stewart’s warning to the new regime taking over at Ibrox from Dave King will have Rangers fans worried about their future.

Scottish clubs are staring at a bleak future with the season suspended for the foreseeable future due to the global outbreak of the coronavirus. With it looking increasingly unlikely that it will return anytime soon as the number of cases soars globally, a number of clubs are under genuine threat of not being able to pay their players and stuff. And Rangers could very well be one of them.

The fans of the Ibrox club have been calling for the season to be declared ‘null and void’, as it is their only hope of stopping Celtic from winning a record-equaling ninth straight Scottish league title. Ironically, cancelling the season will hit them harder than most clubs and most probably push the club towards liquidation. Again.

According to many reports, Rangers already needed a £10 million investment just to stay afloat till the end of the season. And one can only wonder where that figure stands at the moment, with next to no money coming into the club as long as the season remains suspended.

Speaking about the Rangers’ financial situation, Michael Stewart did not provide much hope for the future to their fans. On BBC Sportsound, he said:

"“Aberdeen have said they have £5m of a gap and Rangers costs are going to be substantially more than Aberdeen’s. And no matter what club you are, you are going to have no real income coming in. No matter what club you are, there is going to be a gap there, and we already knew there was going to be £10m gap to get through the season.“So a lot of praise for Douglas Park and John Bennett for stepping up. They are going to have to find some finance from somewhere to mitigate what is going to be a very difficult time for everybody in the next couple of months. But it is a huge ask. Douglas Park has obviously put his hand in his pocket substantially over the last few years but it is a huge ask.“We don’t know what is happening behind the scenes with regards to fresh investment but I’ve got to imagine at this time when things are so uncertain I’d be astonished if anyone can find fresh investment from anywhere right now.”"

That is exactly what makes their calls for the season to be cancelled even more puzzling. Celtic are in a much better position financially but the Ibrox club certainly cannot afford to pay back broadcasters. Probably they prefer extinction over seeing Celtic lift another title.
