Celtic took part in a Scottish Premiership League emergency meeting earlier this morning that was set to address the suspension due to COVID-19.

Scottish football, and football all around Europe has come to a screeching halt due to the novel coronavirus. While it is undesirable to not have Celtic or football to watch or cheer for, there have been some unforeseen hardships that have arisen from this suspension of play.

First, officials and clubs were unaware as to how long this suspension may last. At first, it seemed as if play would resume as soon as early April. As more information has been gathered, a return to play in April seems unlikely, and any football activity is growing unlikely.

These shutdowns have put many clubs, especially smaller market clubs, in a financial bind. Many clubs depend on game day revenue, and the payout that comes from the completion of a season. Since both of those have been put on hold, clubs are struggling to meet their financial obligations.

The SPFL held an emergency meeting this morning (Friday) to address the economic concerns as well as the cash payout that was given to clubs (you can read our piece about that here). The meeting was held via video conference as to adhere to regulations and guidelines concerning public gatherings according to the BBC.

Talk and rumours have also surrounded Celtic as they could potentially help bailout smaller clubs. Much of the Hoops fanbase is split on this idea. Some believe that Celtic has earned their own, and as such should keep it, while the SPFL takes responsibility to keep the clubs propped up. Others understand that if clubs go under, then who is left for Celtic to play? Also, goodwill loans could help Celtic achieve some good faith within the European football community. After all, Rangers are in no position to help.

In any case, we will keep an eye on the way forward and update you as soon as possible.
