A former Celtic star has gone on the record saying that if the season were to end now due to COVID-19 that Celtic should be crowned champions but that it would be ‘tainted’.

What weird times we are currently living in. Most if not all professional sports leagues across the globe have come to a complete halt, as well as most industries across the economic landscape.

What officials don’t know is when, or whether or not those sports leagues will resume play in the near future. This is the case with football, and while there are plenty of theories, rumours and ideas as to what will happen, the truth is nobody really knows right now.

One idea that seems to be one of the more plausible courses of action is to just cancel the rest of the season and award the current leader in the table as the champion. In leagues such as the Scottish Premiership League and the English Premier League, there would not be much argument as to who should be crowned champion (unless you’re a Manchester City or Rangers fan).

Now, former Celtic star Kris Commons has weighed in on the situation while speaking with talkSport:

"“From a personal perspective, I would like to think the season will not be null and void as if it never happened. Celtic, 30 games in and 13 points clear of Rangers should be champions, if that is the case.“It almost feels as it if would be somewhat tainted in a way that they’ve not carried out the full fixture list. But, as I said previously, Celtic are top of the league for a specific reason because they have proved to be the best side in Scotland up until these 30 games.“There could be plenty of twists and turns remaining in these eight fixtures but, it’s one that, would Steven Gerrard actually contemplate that sort of scenario? I don’t know. It’s a strange one. The magic nine in a row and going for ten, you’d like to think that Celtic would fulfil their fixture list and everything would be okay in a normal scenario.“But, at the minute, people’s health, that is the main concern. That is why we’re talking about this right now.”"

What is interesting about Kris Commons’ statement is that he believes in this particular scenario that a title would be ‘tainted’. Perhaps more absurd is the notion that Commons, or any Rangers supporter could even fathom a complete drop off in performance by Celtic, and Rangers winning every single remaining match on the list.

However, Commons does bring up a good point in the sense that this season would always have a bit of a question mark around it. As Hoops fans, we should want the season to be fully played out, even behind closed does. We would never want the nine-in-a-row, or hopefully ten-in-a-row to have ever been in doubt.
