After Kris Ajer’s representative announced that the Norwegian will be leaving Parkhead in the summer, Celtic fans did not hold back.

As if Celtic did not already have a lot on their plate heading into next Sunday’s Glasgow Derby with the coronavirus outbreak and fears that the season could end up being suspended, with a number of European leagues having done so over the past week.

Thus, Kris Ajer’s representative Tore Pedersen could not have timed it worse when he announced that his client will not be extending his Celtic contract and plans to leave in the summer.

Now it is pretty clear why this could be a huge problem for team morale and subsequently performances on the pitch. At the end of the day, you are forced to question how dedicated someone is to the team’s cause when he has already decided to leave in the next few months. But an even bigger problem with Pedersen’s public announcement is the fact that how off-colour Ajer has been over the past several months.

After looking like he was set to be one of the main players at Parkhead earlier in the season and being linked with a move away from the club for a fee close to £25 million. Since then he has faded away very badly with Jullien appearing to the main man in the heart of defence while Ajer has settled into a peripheral role.

Now that might be because he is either simply out of form or not focused on the job at hand with Celtic as mentally he already has a foot out of the door. Whatever may be the case, it is safe to say that the Celtic would take that reported £25 million in a heartbeat right now.

Not an ideal situation to say the least considering the fact that Ajer will likely remain a part of the first-team set up till the end of the season.
