Scott Brown sends warning to SPFL amid Celtic title fears
By Kade Kistner
Celtic captain Scott Brown has fired off a warning to the SPFL amid speculation that the season could be postponed or cancelled.
Across the globe sports are cancelling or abandoning league play due to the novel coronavirus. The idea is to help contain the spread of the virus by limiting large gatherings that typically take place at sporting events and stadiums. For Celtic, who has remained unaffected thus far, that may change.
The Scottish government has now invoked a ban on gatherings of 500 or more people. However, this ban starts on Monday. Conveniently enough, this will be after the Glasgow Derby match between the Hoops and Rangers on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox.
However, there have now been calls to suspend the Scottish Premiership League altogether, rather than play behind closed doors. This would prolong, or extend the process of Celtic claiming their ninth-in-a-row crown that is all but locked up.
One player who is not staying quiet on the issue is Hoops captain Scott Brown. Speaking with the Daily Record, he had this to say about league play:
"“If it ends, it stays at it is. We are in a good position but we just need to focus on this game on Sunday. The main thing is we make sure everyone is OK, they are all safe and we try and catch this on the head as soon as we can. But obviously we still want to play football and win as many games as we can whether it’s in front of fans or not.“It will be sad if there’s no fans there because that’s what football is all about. It would be weird playing behind closed doors but if it gets the league done and dusted and we managed to keep up with the fixtures as well, it helps everybody.”"
Scott Brown clearly is hoping that everyone remains safe and healthy. But with distrust in the Scottish football system, a cancellation or postponement could send fans in a frenzy about how it may affect Rangers’ chances are discrediting another Celtic title.
In any case, Celtic are currently 13 points of ahead in the Scottish Premiership League table, and a win on Sunday would only increase that lead. Also, a victory on Sunday would help solidify any doubt for the champions even if the remainder of the season is cancelled or postponed.
