Celtic are hoping to tie down Odsonne Edouard to a new contract by offering him a wage hike and a gentleman’s agreement.
Odsonne Edouard is without doubt the best player plying his trade in Scotland right now. The Frenchman has scored 27 goals and assisted a further 17 in just 42 appearances for Celtic this season, an involvement of more than a goal each game. Thus, it is only natural that some of the biggest clubs around Europe have taken notice of his considerable talents.
Money speaks in modern football and Celtic do not have the financial muscle to fend off the top clubs. Thus, when they coming calling for some of the club’s jewels, they ultimately end up getting what they want. And Odsonne Edouard seems to be next in line to exit Parkhead for a big club. That is the sad reality of the situation.
Celtic though are in a sticky situation. While they know that they can extract huge money by selling the striker, that could put a potential 10-in-a-row in danger. The Hoops currently sit 12 points of main title rivals Rangers and it will be a huge surprise if they do not lift the title at the end of the season.
The Frenchman’s contract runs out at the end of 2022 and holding on to him for one more season would drastically reduce his value in the transfer market. Thus, the club are hoping to get him to sign a contract extension.
According to Get French Football News, Celtic will be offering him a new contract with a considerable wage hike and a gentleman’s agreement between the two parties that he can leave the club if he wants to in 2021.
This contract appears to be great for both club and player. While in a perfect world Celtic would like to keep hold of Edouard for as long as they can, it is very likely that he is hoping to move to one of Europe’s elite (in terms of financial strength at least) very soon.
We can hope though that he will be interested in staying with the club and help them win the Holy Grail before moving, you get opportunities like that only once in a lifetime. Do the right thing Eddy, sign the contract.
