Stephen McGowan, the Scottish Daily Mail Chief Football writer, is now wondering whether or not Celtic coaching staff have a say in recruitment.
Celtic is well-known for developing talent and then selling it off for a substantial profit. But, what Stephen McGowan is wondering about out loud isn’t the recruitment on the developmental side of the house but that of the first team.
Celtic has brought in many players who could have been called ‘busts’ such as Marian Shved, and most recently Patryk Klimala and Ismaila Soro. None of these players have made an impact on the first team, and it remains to be seen if they ever will.
Neil Lennon wanted to bring in experience this winter, and instead got two young men who are clearly not ready to help contribute to the club in any meaningful manner. So, if Neil Lennon makes comments about needing experience, and he doesn’t get it, then who is making the decision?
Stephen McGowan took to Twitter to ask the tough questions, here is what he said:
There are a few issues at hand here. 1. Is Neil Lennon allowed to help make personnel acquisition decisions? 2. If not, then why bring in these young players who can’t contribute?
The answers are simple. These young players are brought in in hopes that one of them sticks and can be sold on later down the road for profit. Neil Lennon can ask for whatever he wants, but it does not mean the board will give it to him.
If Celtic wishes to be a dominating force in Europe, then the Hoops board will need to take heed of its coaching staff and its needs.
