Prominent Celtic opponent and pundit, Ally McCoist, unexpectedly came to the clubs defence after TalkSport’s Jason Cundy tried to take his shot at the club.
Celtic 3-1 loss to FC Copenhagen on Thursday evening brought a lot more with it than just their exit from the Europa League and European competition for the 2019/2020 season. The loss also brought questions about Neil Lennon’s tactics, missed opportunities, the pressure of being favourites and what it could mean for Scotland’s Champions League chances next season.
Some of those questions were posed when TalkSport’s Jason Cundy took his opportunity to take a shot at the Hoops after the disappointing loss to FC Copenhagen.
While it is not unexpected for TalkSport pundits to take their shots, Jason Cundy took a low one, at a low time for the Hoops. Cundy claimed that the Hoops had shamed Scottish football with their loss to FC Copenhagen. Unexpectedly, Ally McCoist, a prominent critic of Celtic came to a surprising defence of the Hoops.
Speaking to SunSport, Ally McCoist gave the Hoops what seemed to be the benefit of the doubt:
"“Of course he’s (Cundy) not right.“Listen, they’ve had a terrible 45 minutes in Europe.“They’ve had some great results and performances this year.“To beat Lazio home and away, who are going very, very well in Serie A and are a very good side, it’s a brilliant achievement.”"
I can’t believe I am saying this, but Ally McCoist is right. A ton of fans will balme Neil Lennon and his in game decisions on the loss. Others will blame individual performances on the pitch. But nothing can take away from the fact that the Hoops are well on their way to once again being domestic champions.
The focus now must be focused towards Sunday’s matchup with St. Johnstone, and making sure that the club progresses through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. This loss will hurt, but it shouldn’t define the remainder of the season.
