The Aberdeen superstar has made a stunning admission about his relationship with the Hoops before his side welcome Celtic to Pittodrie stadium on Sunday.
Any good player that comes through the ranks in Scottish football is bound to be linked with Celtic at some point or the other. Having won eight straight league titles, it should come as no surprise that the Glasgow side want only the best of the best to play for them. And one man who has linked with the club for quite some time now is Aberdeen centre-back Scott McKenna.
McKenna has established himself in the Scottish national team over the last couple of years, even been given the captain’s armband in just his fourth appearance. And he has been an incredibly consistent performer for Aberdeen at the club level.
There is no doubt that he is headed for the Aberdeen captaincy if he ends up staying at the club for the foreseeable future. But it is interesting how long he will do so considering that he could easily play for either of the Glasgow clubs and would probably be of interest to a number of sides down South as well.
And if his recent admission is anything to go by, then we might just know where he wants to end up next in his heart. Speaking with The Scotsman, he admitted to being a Celtic supporter while growing up:
"“My dad was a Celtic season-ticket holder. I went to a few Celtic games round the time when they were doing well in Europe. I remember being there when Alan Thompson scored versus Barcelona. I used to love going to a midweek game at Parkhead under the lights.“Of course, when you play against Celtic for Aberdeen I want Aberdeen to win. When you become a professional and it’s your job, supporting Celtic goes out the window. You play for Aberdeen, you want the best for Aberdeen.”"
Professional football is a different beast though and more often then not, you do not get to play for the club that you grew up supporting.
McKenna might very well get the opportunity to do so though, with Celtic having already put in a £5 million bid for him earlier in the summer according to The Scottish Sun. Aberdeen though seem to rate him much higher and it will be interesting to see whether the two clubs are able to reach a deal.
