David Moyes has made a huge claim regarding Celtic and Rangers, comparing the two Glasgow giants to the top English sides.
The League Cup has been relegated to the status of a secondary competition in recent years as the big English teams are more concerned with the other three tournaments that they compete in. It is often neglected in England with the top clubs often seeing it as more of a distraction than as an opportunity to win a trophy.
As a result, the bigger clubs often end up naming second-string sides for the competition in order to protect their first-team. Nowhere has it been more evident this season than in Liverpool’s astounding 5-0 loss to Aston Villa when they decided to change their entire team in what seemed to be an attempt to get knocked out of the competition more than anything else.
David Moyes has suggested that Celtic and Rangers should compete in the English League Cup in order to reignite fan interest in the competition. The West Ham manager believes that the introduction of Celtic and Rangers into the competition could turn it into a money-spinner.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Moyes said:
"“Folk might shoot it down but I think the opportunity to introduce the Scottish teams would give it a chance.“Maybe one of the TV companies — if you’re calling it the British Cup — might be a bit more interested and it might bring in a bit more money.“I don’t think that down here the clubs like Celtic and Rangers are given enough credit for the size of their football clubs.“I would argue there are only maybe two clubs in England bigger than either of them.”"
The former Celtic player is not wrong in claiming that the two Glasgow giants are bigger than most English clubs. But it is hard to see any such competition happening with the amount of football that both the clubs already have to play each season.
In order for this ‘British Cup’ to be introduced, both countries would most likely have to scrap their League Cups. And with all due respect, other than Celtic and Rangers, it is hard to imagine any other Scottish club compete with the English sides at this point of time.
