Victor Wanyama has been linked with a return to Celtic in January as he continues to struggle for minutes at White Hart Lane.

Victor Wanyama has seen is career stagnate completely since moving to Tottenham Hotspur. Once one of the most promising young talents in Europe, the Kenyan has been reduced to nothing more than a glorified reserve player. And appears that a move back to the Hoops might be on the cards for the man who made a name for himself under the bright lights of Celtic Park.

When Wanyama arrived at Celtic in 2011, very few people knew about him in Europe. After all, he had spent his entire senior career at little known Belgian side Beerschot. Even the most optimistic Hoops could not have predicted that the impact that he would have at the club in his short spell there.

No fan will ever forget his goal against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, when Celtic defeated the Spanish giants 2-1 in one of the most unforgettable European nights at Parkhead. Wanyama spent only two seasons might have spent only two seasons playing in the Hoops, but in that short time he had endeared himself to the fans and it feels like they would welcome him back with open arms if he would indeed return.

Interestingly, the Kenyan had started his Premier League career in brilliant fashion at Southampton enjoying three very fruitful seasons at St Mary’s Stadium. But then a move to Tottenham ended up in his downfall, in what was then considered a necessary step forward for the midfielder who had the world at his feet.

He enjoyed a spectacular first season at White Hart Lane but a combination of injuries and bad form saw him lose his place in the starting line-up. And he has never managed to gain it back, not even making the Tottenham bench most of the time these days.

His performance for Kenya against Togo on Monday should serve as a wake up call. He was criticised heavily by the Kenyan fans, some of whom even asked for his removal from the national team. This is a heavy downfall for a player who was their star player not long ago.

It is clear that Wanyama needs some change if he wants to bring his career back on track. And it is being reported by Daily Record that a move on loan to Celtic in January might just be it. He was already linked with a move back in the summer, but the transfer failed to materialise.

Scott Brown is 34-years-old and if not anything, the Kenyan can serve as back up to the longtime Celtic captain. Is he the same player that he once was? Most probably not. But a six-month loan with no obligation to buy is not a risk that the club cannot afford to take.

It might turn out that all the Kenyan is lacking is confidence. He could very well rediscover his form if he gets regular minutes under Lennon at Parkhead. And we all know how good he is when on song.

As for Wanyama, a move to Celtic move makes all the sense in the world. He will be going back to a place which he is familiar with and adored at. Sometimes to get to the future, you must go through your past.
