Celtic told who they must buy in the January transfer window
Celtic have been told by Craig Beattie in what area they must strengthen in the January transfer window if they want to beat out Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race this season.
Celtic have again made a strong start to their season as has been the case in recent years. The Hoops currently find themselves at the top of the Premiership table, in the final of the Scottish League Cup and in the knockout stage of the Europa League. But unlike recent years, Rangers are neck and neck with their Glasgow rivals this season.
Steven Gerrard’s men currently sit at second position in the league table, on the same points as Celtic but behind on goal difference. They will also be facing the defending champions in the Scottish League Cup final and are in a strong position to qualify from their Europa League group. It is safe to say they are currently going through a resurgence under the management of the Liverpool legend.
As a result, we are expected to have a much tighter Premiership title race this time around than we have had over the past eight seasons, which have been all won by Celtic. Aiming to win a record-equaling ninth straight league title, Neil Lennon’s side will know they cannot afford to slip up. Thus, they might be tempted to invest in the winter transfer window in order to pull ahead of Rangers in the title race.
And former Celtic striker, Craig Beattie, believes he exactly knows in what position The Hoops must strengthen. As reported by the Daily Record, Beattie said:
"“At the minute, Celtic are very light up front with the exception of Edouard. So should he get injured or something happens to him, I think Edouard is more valuable at this point.“Celtic need to strengthen in January. Both need to strengthen, if I’m being honest. Rangers need to strengthen in terms of numbers because if something was to happen to Morelos then you’re relying on Defoe to play all the matches but Celtic really need to strengthen if something was to happen Edouard.”"
On this occasion Beattie does raise a good point, as Edouard has been Celtic’s main striker for quite some time now without adequate backup. Over the last few years, Leigh Griffiths has been going through a rough patch off the pitch with both injury and personal struggles, and clearly is not the same striker that he once was. Bayo has also failed to impress since moving to the club with the chances that he has been given by the manager.
As a result, it would make sense for the Hoops to sign a striker in January. Celtic have one of the tightest schedules in world football and it is very easy to burn out under the constant pressure of playing two games every week. Injuries can happen anytime in football and if Edouard was to go down with a long-term one, it could very well spell the end of Celtic’s title challenge.
