Barry Ferguson has claimed that Rangers have one advantage over Glasgow rivals, Celtic, as the Scottish Premiership title race starts to heat up between the two sides.

The Scottish Premiership title race is much tighter than it has been in recent years. Celtic have dominated Scottish football for almost a decade now, winning 8 league titles in a row and completed a Treble Treble last season. But Rangers have made a resurgence since the arrival of Steven Gerrard as manager and are mounting a serious title challenge this season.

It had looked like it was going to be another cakewalk to the title for the Hoops earlier in the season when they completely outplayed Rangers at Ibrox in a 2-0 win. But Steven Gerrard’s mean have maintained an impressive record since then and currently sit on the same points as Celtic, only behind on goal difference.

Yet it is hard to give an edge to the Rangers in the title race considering how dominant Celtic have been this season, having already qualified for the knockout stage in the Europa League with back-to-back wins over Lazio. But that has not stopped former Rangers midfielder, Barry Ferguson, from claiming that the Teddy Bears have one advantage over their Glasgow rivals.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, the current Kelty Hearts manager said:

"“I think Rangers are slightly stronger in the sense that they have got Defoe.“Celtic, on the other hand, Leigh Griffiths is still struggling to get back in terms of fitness.“I think he [Bayo] is out injured. I think that’s clearly an area Celtic need to strengthen in January, as far as I look at it now, Rangers are in a better situation, with having two key strikers available.”"

Ferguson’s views should come as no surprise considering his long history with Rangers. But it is hard to justify them.

Rangers do have two great strikers in the form of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe. The Colombian has already scored an astonishing 22 goals this season while his veteran English teammate has added another 13. But the fact is that the two cannot start in the same team an other than them, there is not much goal threat in Gerrard’s team at the moment.

Celtic on the other hand have four players who are looking like they’ll cross the 20-goal mark this season. Edouard, Christie and Forrest have scored 13,12 and 11 goals, respectively. Mohamed Elyounoussi also has 7 goals in just 12 appearances despite arriving only earlier this summer.

As Jay-Z would say – ninety nine problems but a goal ain’t one!
