Celtic captain opens up on sickening abuse received at Ibrox
Scott Brown received sickening abuse from a 15-year-old Rangers fan regarding the midfielder’s late sister after Celtic’s 2-0 win at Ibrox. Now the Celtic captain has opened up on the incident for the first time.
Scott Brown could not be blamed for being on cloud nine after a brilliant display away at Ibrox saw Celtic beat Rangers 2-0 in what was the Hoops’ first win at their cross-city rivals home ground since the arrival of Steven Gerrard. It was not to last though as the Celtic captain’s mood would have surely turned sour after the outrageous abuse he received outside Ibrox from a 15-year-old Rangers fan regarding his late sister.
Brown joined Celtic in 2007 and just a year later in 2008, he lost his younger sister, Fiona. She was just 21-years old at the time and had lost her battle with skin cancer.
It is shocking that anyone could stoop so low as to mock someone about such a tragic personal loss. And Brown has received support from all corners of the footballing world as the fan’s sick actions have been condemned by supporters of both clubs.
Now the 34-year-old has opened up about the abuse he received outside Rangers’ stadium for the first time. And he feels that this recent incident is nothing new as he has been receiving similar abuse throughout his Celtic career. Speaking to the media, Brown said:
"“You can shout and swear at me as much as you want on the park but don’t go into detail off the park like that.“It’s not just one incident, it’s happened over the last 12 years of my career. It’s hard, it’s sad and it shouldn’t be happening.”"
The midfielder was quick to salute the fans of both sides though for their reaction after the incident became public knowledge after a video was released on social and spread like wildfire:
"“The fans from both sides have been phenomenal.”"
Rangers even sent Brown a personal email apologising for the abuse he had received from one of their fans and the Celtic captain termed it as a “lovely” gesture on the Glasgow side’s part. The 15-year-old was banned from Ibrox for life and was arrested as well.
Hopefully Brown has managed to put the incident behind himself as well as Celtic return from international break this weekend to take on Hamilton away at the SuperSeal Stadium in the Scottish Premiership.
