Fraser Forster believes two of his teammates are Celtic legends
Fraser Forster recently returned to Celtic on loan after spending half a decade away in the Premier League. And now the goalkeeper has revealed that he believes two of his teammates are Celtic legends because they never made the move to England.
Fraser Forster swapped Celtic Park for St Mary’s Stadium back in 2014 for a reported £10-million. But after a few successful seasons at Southampton, he himself fall down the pecking order beneath Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn. After spending a frustrating season on the Saints’ bench, the former England international is now back at Parkhead on a season long loan.
While the goalkeeper chased his dream of playing in the top of league of his native country, he feels two of his teammates Scott Brown and James Forrest have become Celtic legends by not leaving the club for the riches and glamour of the Premier League. And Hoops fans will very well know about the attraction of the Premier League after seeing Kieran Tierney leave for Arsenal earlier in the summer at just 22 years of age.
Brown began his Hibernian back in 2002 but moved to Celtic in 2007 and has remained loyal to them ever since. Now 34-years-old, he has served as club captain since 2010 and will surely hang up his boots in the next few years while still wearing a Hoops jersey. And there is no question about his status as a ‘legend’ at the club.
Forrest on the other hand came up through the Celtic youth ranks joining the club as a 11-year-old and has never featured for any other club in his career. He already has over 350 appearances for the Hoops in which he has 74 goals. And hopefully he will sign a new long-term contract soon that will see him end his career at Celtic as a one-club man.
Speaking about the two to the Scottish Sun, Forster said:
"“It’s mad. I’ve been away for five years and at that time he was a young player. Not that he’s old now!“He’s gone on to be absolutely fantastic over the past few years. He’s just kicked on to a different level. Hopefully he’ll be the man who gets us through this year as well.“He’s been fantastic. The first time he was younger, but he was still putting in great performances then.“Jamesy’s just taken it to a different level. He’s consistently producing world-class performances.“It’s fantastic to see because he’s a lovely lad. It’s just great to see him doing well.“It’s also been good to see Broony. There are a lot of lads who were here when I left, which is nice. It just makes it easier to settle back into the changing room again.“It’s really like I’ve never been away. You just walk back in and there are so many familiar faces everywhere. It’s a really nice feeling.“But Broony, is fantastic. He’s really looking after himself so well and is so consistent.“He’s fundamental to the team and is absolutely crucial.“He was when I was here before and still is now, in terms of what he brings to the changing room and what he brings to the pitch.“Sometimes he doesn’t get the credit he deserves and people don’t realise how good he is until he’s not there on the pitch.“He’s another one who seems to get better with age and he’s a top player. As a captain, he’d be among the best I’ve ever had.”"
Forster will be hoping to achieve legendary status as well at the club where he first made a name for himself now that he is back. He was presented to the Celtic Park crowd at half-time of last week’s Europa League Play-Off against AIK Stockholm to a great ovation. And if he does end up making his loan stay permanent next season, there is no reason he cannot end up being a Celtic legend when he hangs up his boots just like Scott Brown and James Forrest.
