Leigh Griffiths sets 100-goal target for Celtic this season
Celtic striker, Leigh Griffiths, believes the club can score a century of goals this season on their way to a ninth straight Scottish Premiership title.
It is safe to say that Leigh Griffiths has slowly but surely brought his Celtic career back on track after personal issues saw him take an indefinite leave from football back in December of last year in order to tackle his off-field problems.
But now the man from Edinburgh is back and seemingly firing on all cylinders having scored in both of Celtic’s SPFL games this season. The first was a brilliant strike from outside the box against St Johnstone on ‘Flag Day’. And the second, an even better free-kick from distance away at Motherwell to put Celtic ahead.
Celtic have already scored a combined 12 goals in their first two games in the Premiership and Griffiths believes that the club can score a hundred goals this season. When asked by the Scottish Sun about the possibility of the feat, Griffiths said:
“Yeah, we’ve started with 12 in two games so it’s 88 to go! As long as we play on the front foot and create as many chances as we can we have players who can put the ball in the back of the net.
“Going forward we look a threat — every time we get in the opposition half we look like scoring.
“As long as we keep doing that, and creating chances, with players like myself, Odsonne, Oli, Ryan and Jamesy we’ll get goals from all areas of the team.
“It’s about taking chances when we get them.”
The last time the Hoops achieved the feat was in the ‘Invincibles’ season under Brendan Rodgers when they scored 106 goals in the Premiership. Lennon himself managed it in the 2013/14 season when they ended up scoring 102 goals.
But the feat is not as common as you would be led to believe considering the domination Celtic have had over the Premiership over the past decade. It has only happened in those two aforementioned instances in that period of time.
It does not feel out of reach this time around considering the start the Hoops have made this season. And with rumours circulating that Celtic are about to bring in further attacking reinforcements, Griffiths’ crystal ball might be right on the money.
