Could Celtic raid Spurs for unwanted trio in January transfer window?
With Celtic looking to strengthen in the January transfer window they could do worse than raid Spurs, who are looking to offload a number of their stars.
The Daily Mail has reported that the London club is looking to offload the likes of Victor Wanyama, Vincent Janssen, Fernando Llorente, and Michel Vorm.
And with their failure to add a single new player during the summer transfer window, they will be looking to strengthen their side as they try to chase down Premier League leaders Liverpool – but will need to cut their squad down as they have far too many players for their League and Champions League quotas.
Victor Wanayama is certainly a surprise name on the list of players looking to be offloaded, but with ongoing injury problems and making just seven appearances this season in all competitions he looks to be surplus to requirements.
Contracted to Spurs until 2021, Wanyama isn’t looking to leave the Premier League side but there are other clubs circling around the Kenyan if his time is up – would a return to Celtic be ruled off the table entirely? Especially with the thought of the midfielder possibly viewed as an heir apparent to Scott Brown?
Dutch international Vincent Janssen – a £17 million signing from AZ Alkmaar – is another one who is heading out of the exit door and seemingly watched Celtic play Motherwell at Celtic Park last Wednesday. With 18 months left on his contract, Spurs will be looking to recoup some of the £17 million they paid out for the striker back in 2016.
Celtic had scouted Janssen during his AZ Alkmaar days and now they could finally get their man with striking options at Celtic needing strengthened since the £19 million sale of Moussa Dembele to Lyon in the summer and Leigh Griffiths out of action for an extended period of time.
The third player that could potentially do a job for Celtic is Spurs keeper Michel Vorm. While Celtic have the likes of Craig Gordon, Scott Bain, and Dorus de Vries on their books – only Bain looks capable enough to play in the style that Rodgers wants.
Gordon gives the fans the heeby-jeebies when he has the ball at his feet and he did himself no favours against Aberdeen on Wednesday with some bomb scare passing at the back, but has been superb for Celtic despite certain limitations in his game and is contracted until 2020. Then there is Dorus de Vries who initially came into the Celtic side at the expense of Gordon, before the former Swansea keeper dropped off the radar entirely playing just 15 times since his move to the Scottish champions in August 2016.
Celtic had been linked with Vorm last January before Celtic signed Scott Bain on loan from Falkirk, and with de Vries more than certain on his way out, Vorm – who is out of contract this summer – could be a perfect addition to Celtic’s goalkeeping options and having previously worked with Rodgers at Swansea it could be a perfect match for both parties.
Janssen is the most realistic of the trio to potentially join Celtic in January, while there will be questions whether Wanyama would even consider a return north of the border having previously played for Celtic. And with two good keepers in Gordon and Bain at his disposal already, bringing Vorm in could be overkill but one that would suit Rodgers’ style of play.
Who would you like to see Celtic go for in the January transfer window?
