Celtic have announced that influential midfielder Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year deal that will see him stay at the club until 2023.
A product of the club’s Youth Academy, McGregor has been one of the most consistent performers for Celtic over the past few seasons and made his 200th appearance in the 2-0 defeat to Hibs at the weekend.
Speaking to the official Celtic website, McGregor said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign until 2023. It was all pretty smooth. The club gave me a call and I was desperate to get it done straight away.
“The gaffer has been brilliant with me, too, and there was no question on my mind that I wanted to sign straight away and get it done. I’ve got to thank the club for that, it was very seamless, and of course, I’ve got to thank the manager as well.
“Since the manager has come in, my game has improved an awful lot. That’s due to him coming in, changing a few things, and getting me playing with confidence. In the last 18 months, I think I’ve been able to emerge as a bigger character. I just want to keep doing that, keep learning every day, and continue becoming a better player for this club.
“At Celtic there’s a massive demand to win, and, coming through the system, you’ve got to be a winner. That’s a massive part of it – the fact that you want to win things as a professional footballer. Celtic is the best platform for that.
“This is an amazing place to play football, and the fans are amazing. Celtic Park is one of the best arenas in world football, and the fans are amazing. To actually get to play your football here every second Saturday is an incredible thing.
“For the fans, it’s just about me trying to be here for as long as I can, and trying to give them some special moments.”
McGregor has won four Premiership titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups since making his first-team debut in 2014 against KR Reykjavik in a Champions League qualifier.
Overall he has scored 34 goals in 201 appearances for the Scottish champions and was an integral part of Brendan Rodgers’ invincible side that won the domestic treble and secured back to back trebles last season.
