Celtic ace Leigh Griffiths has rubbished claims made by Rangers chairman Dave King that Celtic “did not take full advantage of Rangers four year absence from the top flight”
When I first read these comments I thought what I imagine most football fans thought which was ‘this fella should enter the Edinburgh comedy festival’.
The more I read King’s comments though, my giggling gradually turned to shock and quite frankly bewilderment. Purely based on the fact that Celtic won six top flight domestic honors including the league title every year in this time.
Ludicrous
Leigh Griffiths is clearly someone who shares my thinking on King’s comments describing them as ‘ludicrous’. King has been quoted in several newspapers this week claiming that the hoops should be much further ahead of Rangers seeing as they were ‘in the wilderness for four years’.
The Scottish striker was having none of this however, stating that ‘the gulf couldn’t be any bigger’. Here is Griffiths comments in full
“The gulf couldn’t be any bigger. They’ll be trying to bridge the gap.
But for him to come out and say we should be further ahead is ludicrous.
What was the gulf? 30-odd points. How does he expect that to be bigger? They were touting at the start of last season that they were going to win the league and this and that.
Joey Barton was coming up and saying he was going to be the best player in Scotland – he lasted a few months. In the first [Old Firm] game, they got hammered 5-1 and they got hammered 5-1 at the end of the season.
So, the gulf couldn’t be any bigger. This season, they’ll be trying to bridge the gap. We just want to concentrate on our job and our job is to defend our title. And if we do that, we’ll have no qualms about it.”
Bizarre
The comments clearly agitated Griffiths who seemed perplexed while remaining calm and cool. This is very understandable as the timing of Mr King’s comments seems the most bizarre of all. If he had made them at the beginning of the season then at a stretch you could argue that he has a case. However, to say this a few weeks after Celtic had wrapped up the domestic treble, surpassed 100 points and finished a whopping 39 points ahead of Rangers the comments are just baffling.
