It is admittedly hard to put this game in to historic context, but let’s take a look at where these two clubs have been and were going heading in to the match.

Both came in flying high domestically, with neither side dropping a match yet in the Scottish or English Premierships. However, the Hoops came in to this match severe underdogs thanks to a thrashing at the hands of Barcelona on the previous UCL matchday for this group.

There’s also the fact that Celtic has gone through so much upheaval in transition from the failed Ronny Delia era to Brendan Rodgers. What could possibly be expected against the second of three giants being faced in Group C?

Instead, the Bhoys came out and made City work for the draw as the visitors had to come from behind three times just to earn a point and hope they can stay within striking distance of group leader Barcelona.

Moussa Dembele became a sensation on the European stage and most of Rodgers’ summer signings shined brightly when the side needed the result the most. It was hope restored on the big stage, and that was vital for a supporters group used to being let down over the past three years.

We’ll see just how significant it is to the hopes of getting out of the group or even off to the Europa League, but this was a far cry from the non-competitive nature of Delia’s teams.
