It’s well known that Celtic Park can deliver an intimidating atmosphere for visiting players. The fans' backing for the team is loud and strong, especially on UEFA Champions League nights like the one with RB Leipzig last week. Over the years, the Parkhead atmosphere has become a major part of the attraction of seeing the Hoops play in Europe.

You can see it having an effect as the two teams line up on the pitch before the match. As the TV cameras go down the two sets of players, just watch the opposition’s faces as the noise of Celtic Park builds up. And that’s before the game has started.

While all that is obvious to anyone who watches and listens or is lucky enough to be in the crowd, the astonishing level of the crowd noise has just been confirmed. Leipziger Volkszeitung recorded the sound levels at key points on Tuesday night. The results show the crowd were amazingly loud.

They noted that the sound levels were at 100 decibels just for the Celtic team lineup being read out. The singing of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was around 113dB, rising to 117dB for the Champions League anthem, which could barely be heard. The fans though were just warming up. The crowd reaction to Kuhn’s first goal registered at 121dB. That was topped shortly by his second goal at 122dB. Celtic’s third through Reo Hatate recorded another 121dB, as loud as a jet engine starting up.

That is close to record-breaking for crowd noise at a European sports stadium. It was just below a 131dB reading for a 2011 Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce derby.

Celtic fans are unlikely to settle for anything other than first place. The team consistently break records after all.

If the successful Champions League return continues we should expect the fans to roar them to another one. Let's see how things go from here.
