According to reports in Brazil, Celtic have made a €3 million bid for a Brazilian centre-back who currently plays for Cruzeiro.
With are just weeks away from the transfer window reopening and despite making a very strong start to the season, Celtic are expected to improve their squad. The injury bug has bit the club throughout the season and one position that they will certainly be looking to add to is centre-back.
Jozo Simunovic’s troubles with injuries have continued and he is not expected to return to the pitch before 2020. Hatem Abd Elhamed has also had his own troubles staying fit for a long length of time. This has left Neil Lennon with only Christopher Jullien and Kris Ajer at the heart of defence and an injury to either of them could set the alatlrm bells ringing.
As a result, the club can be expected to sign another centre-back in January. And this search has taken them to Brazil. According to Globoesporte, the Hoops made a €3 million bid for Cruzeiro’s Brazilian centre-back, Fabricio Bruno. But unfortunately the bid was rejected although the Glasgow side could try to test the Brazilian club’s resolve with a higher bid in the future.
Cruzeiro were relegated from the Brazilian Seria A last season and will compete in the Serie B from next season. This has caused major financial troubles at the club and Celtic could manage to pick up the player on a bargain.
Bruno racked up 22 appearances last season and impressed enough to attract a £1.6 million bid from Portuguese side, Sporting Braga. And while that bid was rejected as well, in football everybody has a price. Cruzeiro have already sold another centre-back in the form of Murilo Cerqueira, and at the right price they will sell Bruno as well. Now it is up to Celtic on whether they are ready to match the Brazilian club’s valuation of their star.
