Celtic receive huge injury blow for League Cup final vs Rangers

Celtic could be without its best player when the Hoops take on rivals Rangers in the League Cup Final on Sunday afternoon.

Matches against Rangers are by far and away the biggest moments for much of Celtic and its fanbase. On Sunday, the Hoops have a chance to once again add some hardware to their trophy case by defeating cross-town rivals, Rangers, in the League Cup Final.

Celtic defeated Rangers in Ibrox back in September to the tune of 2-0. However, this time around it may prove to be a tad more difficult for the Bhoys in green and white. Striker, and superstar player Odsonne Edouard could be absent from the League Cup Final match.

The striker sat out from the match against Ross County this past Sunday as well. In the end he was not needed as the Hoops handedly beat Ross County 4-1. Odsonne Edouard also missed the Europa League match against French-side Rennes on Thursday with the same injury.

Speaking to the BBC, Celtic boss Neil Lennon confirmed the injury, as well as gave some insight into a timeline of return for the striker:

“I can’t pinpoint when he’ll be back.

“We have to soldier on without him at the minute and we’ll see how he is as the week goes on. We’re taking it day by day.”

Not only is it possible the Hoops could be without Odsonne Edouard against their arch-rivals, but Rangers have improved since September as well. Rangers look poised to make it through to the Europa League Knockout Stage, with the possibility of being the top seed out of the group.

Despite the improvement from both clubs, the Hoops should still be the favourite team to take home the hardware. Their depth, and raw talent edge out over Rangers, and that should be on full display Sunday.
