Celtic had Filip Benkovic on loan last season, during which time the Croatian proved to do well. Now, there is talking about a possible Parkhead reunion.
Filip Benkovic performed well on loan from Leicester last season with Celtic. In 19 Scottish Premiership League appearances, the Croatian scored two goals and added an assist. However, an ankle injury sidelined him for a large part of the latter half of the season.
Now, it appears that some rumours have began to pop up about a possible return to Parkhead for the centre-back during the winter transfer window. However, would Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers be willing to work out a loan deal with his former club?
Rodgers has alluded to allowing Benkovic out on loan, especially since he is having a hard time making the first team. According to Football Insider, Filip Benkovic is “keen” on returning to the club he was on loan to last season.
Celtic currently employs five true centre-backs, and it is unclear as to where Filip Benkovic would fit into the pecking order with the Hoops. Currently, Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien make a pretty deadly combination at the position. When Jozo Simunovic is healthy, Neil Lennon likes to employ his services to give either Ajer or Jullien a rest. If Benkovic is brought back, it would likely be on loan as Football Insider has said. Furthermore, his playing time would be in question with the multitude of talent at the position that Celtic currently employs.
All of this being said, Filip Benkovic would be a great addition to have down the stretch of the season, especially considering the Hoops can see upwards of three matches a week. Good, talented players will be needed and relied upon to step in and take over in order to give the key players a much needed rest.
