Recent footage has emerged of Jonny Hayes being hit by a bottle during Celtic’s celebrations with their fans at Ibrox after beating Rangers 2-0 through goals from Odsonne Edouard and Hayes himself.
The animosity between supporters of cross-city rivals, Celtic and Rangers, is no secret to fans of Scottish football but any player ever getting hurt due to it never acceptable. One player who came very close on Sunday is Jonny Hayes, the scorer of Celtic’s second goal in their 2-0 win at Ibrox.
Celtic put in a brilliant display to beat their closest domestic rivals at their own home ground and both the fans and the players of the club were clearly jubilant after the game. Thus, they took the opportunity to celebrate on the Ibrox pitch with the ‘travelling’ fans who had only being allocated 800 tickets for the tie. The quickly emptying Rangers stands though did not take the decision lightly as one of them decided to throw a bottle at Jonny Hayes judging from the direction it came.
Celtic TV’s Unique Angle video released on YouTube shows the defender being hit by a bottle thrown from the stands while celebrating with Hoops fans in the away stand after the match. You can see the bottle bouncing off the ground at 43 seconds into the video and then hitting an unsuspecting Hayes. Although it is not clear whether it is a plastic bottle or a glass one, the way it bounces off the ground suggests that it was a plastic bottle filled with water and could have potentially injured Hayes.
The bottle emerges from the Broomland stand where the Rangers fans were seated on the day suggesting that it was an an angry home fan who threw it. Hayes pauses his celebrations after being hit by it and looks annoyed for a few seconds before rejoining his oblivious teammates.
